Maharaja Ranjit Singh (13 November 1780 – 27 June 1839) was given the title Lion of Punjab (Sher-e-Punjab) because he stopped the invasion of Afghan invaders in Lahore; he was proclaimed the Maharaja of Punjab at the age of 21; he belonged to the Sukerchakia Misl; Lahore was his capital till his death; at the time of his death, he was the only sovereign leader left in India; In order to modernise his army, he appointed the French General Jean Franquis Allard; his territory extended from present day Afghanistan to Jammu and Kashmir; he was a secular ruler; he turned Harimandir Sahib at Amritsar into the Golden Temple by covering it with gold and funded Hazoor Sahib gurudwara at the final resting place of Guru Gobind Singh in Nanded, Maharashtra; Hari Singh Nalwa and Zorawar Singh were his generals.
