COP 3 – held in Kyoto in 1997. The parties adopted the Kyoto Protocol wherein industrialized parties (Annex I countries) committed themselves to reducing their Green House Gases (GHG) emissions by an average of 5.2% below 1990 levels by 2012. The Protocol came into force in February 2005.

COP 13 – held in Bali in December 2007. The parties agreed on the ‘Bali Action Plan’ which provides a roadmap for negotiations towards a post-2012 climate arrangement. The ‘Bali Action Plan’ proposes that sustainable forest management and reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation be considered in the negotiation process for a post-2012 climate arrangement. The parties also agreed to the establishment of the Climate Change Adaptation Fund.

COP 16 – held in Cancun in 2016. Methodological guidelines were issued for REDD+. The five activities namely reducing emissions from deforestation, conservation of forest carbon stocks, sustainable management of forest and enhancement of forest carbon stocks were added for REDD+.
