- Constitutional Basis – Article 40 under the Directive Principles of State Policy of the Constitution says – “The state shall take steps to organize village panchayats and endow them with such powers and authority as may be necessary to enable them to function as units of self-government.”
- Important Committees – Balwant Rai Mehta Committee; Ashok Mehta Committee; GVK Rao Committee; L M Singhvi Committee.
- Constitutional Amendments – The 73rd and 74th Amendment Acts provided constitutional status to rural and urban local self government bodies respectively. The 73rd amendment act added a new ‘Part – IX’ to the Constitution of India entitled ‘The Panchayats’. The 74th Amendment Act added the ‘Part – IX – A’ to the Constitution of India entitled ‘The Municipalities’.
